Teaching Philosophy
After I graduate grad school, I will begin my career as a secondary social science teacher. Being a teacher can be one of the hardest jobs to have. I say “can be” because it is difficult if done right. As a teacher, you can choose to take the easier routes like doing simple lectures or having your students watch movies. It becomes harder when teachers choose to put the needs of their students before their own in order to enhance and maximize student learning. These are the kinds of principles that guide my teaching. I want my students to feel important and that their opinions and their needs matter. I hope to be able to cater to each individual as best as I can because I recognize that each student learns differently and responds to instruction differently. When I look back at my experience as a student in the classroom, it is always the teachers who practiced these kinds of principles that made my learning experience more meaningful and impactful. Going into the classroom, it is extremely important to have this mindset as a teacher and that is why I believe I will be successful.
The field of social studies is extremely unique in terms of the effect it can have on students. What motivated me to choose to teach this subject was that I felt it had the most potential to impact my students in the biggest way. Other subjects are certainly important, however, you can only influence the minds of your students so much using finite equations and formulas. Many of the fields of social studies are able to open up the minds of students to see, think, and believe differently than they did when they first entered the classroom. For example, nothing about the subject of history is black and white. History allows its students to entertain the idea of multiple perspectives and appreciate the diversity of these different beliefs. This is something that can have a tremendous positive effect on a student outside of the classroom. Economics and government are preparing students to be functional and competent members of society. Geography, specifically human geography, can open students’ minds to the many different and unique societies outside of their small, immediate world. I chose to teach social studies so that I can hopefully have this kind of positive impact on my students that will stay with them well after they leave my classroom.
